NPC-Only Roles

Certain crew positions aboard the USS Heritage exist only as background or support roles (e.g., technicians, junior staff, routine security personnel, watchstanders, and maintenance crew). These roles are NPC-only and are not held by player characters.

NPC Writing Rules

Ship NPCs (named NPCs such as department heads or senior staff) are written only by the GM or Senior staff, and only played when necessary.

Background NPCs may be written briefly by players to support a scene.

Background NPCs should never be named and should not be assigned a species, gender, rank, or personal traits.

Background NPCs may not make decisions, give orders, or alter outcomes.

The GM may revise or reclaim NPC portrayal at any time for continuity.

How to Refer to Background NPCs

When writing background NPCs, use generic, functional references, such as:

* a technician

* a security officer

* a member of the medical staff

an engineer on duty

a crew member

Avoid:

Names

Species or cultural identifiers

Gendered descriptions

Distinct personalities or recurring behavior

Background NPCs exist only to support the scene and should fade out once their function is complete.

In Short

Players may briefly reference unnamed background crew for scene support, but all named or decision-making NPCs remain under GM control.
